When you’re the star of your student leadership team, you earn attention and accolades from the community. You get the awards, and you earn the successes. So, why are some of your teammates hoping you fall on your face? Sometimes the star of the team has to work harder than anyone at being a humble, approachable, caring team member.
Guest blog by Ruben Bazan. Everyone has fears, and learning to acknowledge them, challenge them, and master them may be one of your life’s most difficult challenges. But think of what’s possible when you rise above your fears and find the respect that moving beyond them brings.
You might need to lead your group through a painful process of shedding a beloved service, raising dues, changing mission, or massively restructuring your organization. That will take a strong spine, a lot of resolve, and a thick skin in the face of criticism and emotional criticisms. But, you still have a responsibility to tackle these difficult challenges with sensitivity toward those affected. You need to include them in the conversation, address their fears, and show that you have concern about the impact on them.
