“Social Excellence” can make you cool

The new book from Phired Up says being “socially excellent” isn’t about being cool or popular. I would argue that being a student leader who intentionally connects with his or her community is pretty damn cool. Buy the book, get off your smart phone and look someone in the eye. It might just change everything.

Be proactive and keep insensitivity away from your Halloween event

Halloween is one of the most enjoyable holidays of the year, but it can also foster a rampant environment of cultural insensitivity. You can’t control the costumes people choose, but you can control whether they introduce insensitivity into your event. A simple statement prior to your event can help to deter some offensive choices, and enforcing standards at the door can keep the party fun for everyone. Be proactive now so that geishas, blackface gangsta pimps, slutty Indians, illegal aliens, zombie terrorists, and other stereotypes aren’t associated with your group the day after the party.

Winning

Sometimes, we get so tied up in all the necessary tasks that we forget that achieving wins in a vital part of successful leadership. Identify what makes your members feel like winners, and then make sure you’re doing what it takes to deliver it. When is the last time your group felt a win? When is the next opportunity? How can every officer deliver a win for the group this semester?
